Raw Vision – Outsider Art

An old publication but a new one for me Raw Vison is the only internatioanl journal of Outsider Art.

First published in 1989 it has continually given an insight into the art of the “unknown, untrained geniuses” who are the flip side to the increasingly corporate world of the Art world as we know it. Outsider Artists are uninfluenced by institutionalized contemporary art, often inventing their own forms and techniques, their work is more raw and instinctive and we are often led into the private world of the artists in a way which is often not possible with regular contemporary art. It also allows us to have a more intimate and personal connection to the work and to the artist themselves.

Outsider and especially Folk Art are also gaining in popularity in the world of Fashion, Textiles and Design. They fit nicely into the continuing trend for all things “hand-crafted” and “Artisanal” and as people continue to look for more local made, honest and personal product choices when shopping.rv37 waldrenarticle Screen shot 2014-02-20 at 11.21.54 AM Screen shot 2014-02-20 at 11.22.16 AM

  1. I think anyone who creates art and is even only dimly aware of the post-modern/contemporary art scene (at least, here in London, anyway) is aware of the enormous gulf that exists between the two. There are so many amazing artists who will never be heard of simply because their art does not fit the mould defined by ‘those who know’. Yet they continue to create great art regardless because that is what they live for.
