Pablo Picasso was an enigma, one of those people who was very special, even among his peers and someone who comes along only once in a generation. A man who was definitely one and a half steps ahead of the rest of us. What I love most of all is the diversity in his work. That he produced notable works in many different fields of Art; painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics and that there were many different, yet significant periods in his life’s work; His Black, Blue and Rose periods, as well as the major contributions he made to Cubism, Neo-Classicism and or course Surrealism and all with a smile on his face. His last quote sums up what I have realized after many years of trying to get inspired, which is that inspiration normally comes when you are doing something else.
Enjoy some quotes from the great man and my own small tribute.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
“Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth.”
“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not. ”
“When I was a child my mother said to me, ‘If you become a soldier, you’ll be a general. If you become a monk, you’ll be the pope.’ Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.”
“The chief enemy of creativity is good sense.”
“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”
